Film Review | Star Wars: The Force Awakens

starwars All the fresh characters and fun of A New Hope (1977), along with a similar plot and some throwback characters, make for the best Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi (1983).

While the film clearly ties in the legendary original trilogy, and to a far lesser extent the so-so prequel trilogy, The Force Awakens also stands on its own as an exciting action/adventure story with broad appeal. Director and Star Trek (2009) resurrector J.J. Abrams here delivers a respectful take on the material, and first-rate technical effects across the board.

Young leads Daisy Ridley and John Boyega bring humorous chemistry to the screen, while Oscar Isaac completes his breakout year as brash pilot Poe Dameron, this generation's would-be Han Solo. While the villains don't quite measure up to their light-side counterparts, the film works in restoring sorely needed credibility and verve to the Star Wars brand.
