Film Review | Jupiter Ascending

jupiter The Wachowskis continue their slump of overblown, unfocused turkeys which began after the well-deserved success of the original Matrix film. Here, a decent cast including Eddie Redmayne, Channing Tatum and Sean Bean are wasted in an incoherent space opera story that long overstays its two-hour-plus running time. By now, the idea of a marginalized person realizing their true potential as a catalytic Demi-God, as is the case with Mila Kunis' Jupiter character, has been bled for all its worth in the sibling directors' previous films.

A few compelling moments of CGI action and 3D spectacle only serve to remind us that everything surrounding them is ill-conceived and poorly executed. From Jupiter's argumentative Eastern European brood being transported to space as hostages, to Tatum as a dog-man hybrid battling imperial lizard troops, the whole exercise feels disjointed and nonsensical - even for a cosmic romp about intergalactic real estate deals.

Once again, The Wachowskis are given the keys to the candy store, and the result is another maddening dose of campy schlock, albeit with some eye-catching special effects. How the same duo that redefined action movie style and attitude with The Matrix could have gone so wrong so many times since is beyond me.
